Want a
Healthy Relationship
with Food?

First, we need to identify the relationship you currently have with food. Just like any relationship that’s not healthy, we need to do some counseling.

  1. What is food to you?

(Do you abuse it? If so, how, when & why?

When did this start and how long has it been going on?

What specifically triggers the abuse?)

  2. Why now do you want to change it?

  3. If you had the perfect relationship with food what would it look like?

  4. Based on your answers, what story & belief system can you now re-write for yourself about the healthy relationship you will now have with food?

What is food?
food/foÍžod/ noun

any nutritious substance that people or animals eat or drink or that plants absorb in order to maintain life and growth.

FOOD=LIFE

GOOD FOOD=GOOD LIFE

The skinny on food.....

We equate food with please & indulgence (there’s nothing wrong with that in a healthy relationship, on occasion and in suitable quantities) But since we need food to live & it’s always around us, usually in abundance, we tend to overindulge to the point where it’s lost that “special” feeling & we’ve become addicts of it.

We need to get rid of the obsession. To do this, we need to brainwash ourselves. We do this by telling ourselves, over and over, the new story and belief system that we have adopted around how we want to view food in our lives in a healthy way. Whatever that may be for you. i,e. FOOD=LIFE FOOD=FUEL FOOD=GROWTH

There’s no need to obsess over something that you have in abundance & easy access to.

At the same time, you’re NOT telling yourself that you CAN’T have it. You’re telling yourself and others that you are CHOOSING not to have it. We always tend to want what we can’t have, so make sure you know that you can have it but are choosing not to based on your new beliefs around food. Don’t demonize any food! There will be a point where you will be able to eat indulgences comfortably in moderation and have a healthy relationship with it!

If you slip up and overindulge at any point in the day STOP right there, in the moment, rationalize with yourself about what happened. Forgive yourself and move on quickly implementing the new belief system. DO NOT keep binging until the morning. DO NOT tell yourself you’ll start again on Monday. Choose to start over right then in that moment implementing the belief system. DO NOT sit in the guilt and shame. It already happened, move on as quickly as possible.

TIPS TO STAY ON TRACK

-Remove foods from your environment that you know are hard for you to stop eating once you start

-Have healthier options and choices pre-made and on hand always ready to eat

-Time out your meals to avoid feeling starved which leads to binges

-Mindful eating technique

-Eating protein first

-Eat whole foods over processed foods

GET TO THE CORE OF YOUR TRUE BEING-MEDITATION-ADOPTING A SPIRITUAL PRACTICE WITHIN YOURSELF

Be still and in silence within yourself at least once a day. Even if it’s for a minute. Connect with the part of you that is timeless and transcends this life. This helps put into perspective ANY life struggles we may have, not just this one around food. When you have the realization that you are more than this body and connect with it, it’s life-changing.

KNOW THAT THIS ISN’T HOW YOU WILL BE FOREVER!

This is how we start to reprogram the brain to view food in a way that works for you based on the story and belief system you would like to have with it. This can be very quick for some and longer for others. Think about how many years you have had this relationship with food. Give yourself time and don’t give up!
